Dear Friend,

Did you know that America's kids spend only four to seven minutes outside per day?  In fact, by the time most children go to kindergarten, they have spent more than 5,000 hours in front of a television – enough time to earn a college degree!

This weekend, you can help reverse these worrisome trends simply by using your extra hour of sunlight to go outside! Click here for a list of ways you and your kids can unplug this weekend.

Then, be sure to take the Be Out There Pledge indicating that you will make outdoor play a healthy habit for your kids. It will take less than a minute—and you'll receive fun tips and interactive tools to inspire you and your family to Be Out There all year long!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Garland

Fw: Kick YouTube

I just found the following instructions for using YouTube videos in classes even when YouTube is blocked.  Too bad I didn't have it last night.

You just select the video you want to save to your computer and add the word kick before the YouTube URL.  Please try it. If you have a problem, explain it on this list.

Detailed instructions follow.

YouTube is a vast library of videos for all content areas. As a teacher, you can search YouTube to find multimedia clips that would be fabulous resources for your classroom. However, YouTube is most likely filtered or blocked in your school.

This week's tool offers an easy way to download (save) YouTube videos to your computer so that you can show them in your classroom - even if you aren't connected to the Internet!

(I can't remember for sure where I learned about this tool, but I think it was first shown to me by my colleague Glenn Wiebe.)

KickYouTube

Getting Ready:

1. 1.Go to: www.youtube.com

2. 2.Locate the desired video.

3.                3.Play a part of the video to make sure it is working.

Loading KickYouTube:

1. 1.Move your mouse into your browsers address (URL) window.

2.                2.Insert the word "kick" in front of "youtube" in the URL.

3. 3.Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

4. 4.When the page reloads you will see KickYouTube's menu bar at the top of the window.

Saving (Downloading) the Video:

1.                1.Click to select the desired format and then click the "Go" button at the right side of the bar.

Note - Experiment with a short video to see which format works best on your computer. I recommend starting with MP4 for Macintosh and FLV for Windows.

2.                2.KickYouTube will take a little time to process. When it is finished, the green "Go" button will change to a blue download button.

3. 3.Right-click (Win) or Control-click (Mac) the blue download button and choose "Save link as" or "Save Target as" or something similar.

4. 4.This will open a window that will allow you to save the video to the desired location on your computer.

5. 5.Once the video is saved, double-click to open it. It should open and play in QuickTime, FlashPlayer, Windows Media Player, or another media player application.

Science Finally Reveals How You Can Actually REVERSE Aging

Science Finally Reveals How You Can Actually REVERSE Aging: "If you were to unravel the tip of the chromosome, a telomere is about 15,000 bases long at the moment of conception in the womb. (Remember the length of the entire chromosome is about 100 million bases.)

Immediately after conception your cells begin to divide, and your telomeres begin to shorten each time the cell divides.

Once your telomeres have been reduced to about 5,000 bases, you essentially die of old age."

Interestingly, researchers have discovered that reproductive cells do not age. They do not undergo the same telomere shortening process as all other cells in your body do.

This is due to the presence and production of an enzyme called telomerase.

Somatic cells (all cells other than your reproductive cells) do not produce telomerase, however, they do contain the gene for telomerase production. The gene is simply turned off, which causes the telomere shortening process to proceed.

The strategy is to turn the telomerase gene back on in somatic cells. They’re doing this by DECIDING THAT YOU CAN DO THIS - - TELL YOUR CELLS TO turn back on telomerase production.

SourceWatch

SourceWatch: "Visit SourceWatch's new portal on corporate 'rights.'

This special SourceWatch page has links to the real story about the Supreme Court's revolutionary and unconstitutional decision asserting that federal laws cannot limit corporate "speech." This special feature helps document who is behind the argument that we the people should not be able to regulate corporations, such as Citizens United, which was founded by Floyd Brown of the infamous Willie Horton smear campaign against then-presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. It features information on growing national efforts to change the law, including moving to amend the Constitution. If you think the Court got it wrong, you can help us put people before corporations.

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight - Yahoo! News

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight - Yahoo! News:

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name.

But why will this moon be bigger than others? Here's how the moon works:

The moon is, on average, 238,855 miles (384,400 km) from Earth. The moon's orbit around Earth – which causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days – is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of the orbit is 31,070 miles (50,000 km) closer than the other.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year.

Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full Moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, star-like object.

Full moon craziness

Many people think full moons cause strange behavior among animals and even humans. In fact several studies over the years have tried to tie lunar phases to births, heart attacks, deaths, suicides, violence, psychiatric hospital admissions and epileptic seizures, and more. Connections have been inclusive or nonexistent.

The moon does have some odd effects on our planet, and there are oodles of other amazing moon facts and misconceptions:

  • A full moon at perigee also brings higher ocean tides. This tug of the moon on Earth also creates tides in the planet's crust, not just in the oceans.
  • Beaches are more polluted during full moon, owing to the higher tides.
  • In reality, there's no such thing as a full moon. The full moon occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon are all lined up, almost. If they're perfectly aligned, Earth casts a shadow on the moon and there's a total lunar eclipse. So during what we call a full moon, the moon's face is actually slightly less than 100 percent illuminated.
  • The moon is moving away as you read this, by about 1.6 inches (4 cm) a year.

The moon illusion

Finally, be sure to get out and see the full moon as it rises, right around sunset. Along the horizon, the moon tends to seem even bigger. This is just an illusion.

You can prove to yourself that this is an illusion. Taking a small object such as a pencil eraser, hold it at arm's length, and compare its size to that of the moon just as it rises. Then repeat the experiment later in the night and you'll see that the moon compares the same in both cases. Alternately, snap two photos of the moon, with a digital camera or your cell phone, when the moon is near the horizon and later when it's higher in the sky. Pull both photos up on your computer screen and make a side-by-side comparison.

Astronomers and psychologists agree the moon illusion is just that, but they don't agree on how to explain it.
