Fw: Kick YouTube

I just found the following instructions for using YouTube videos in classes even when YouTube is blocked.  Too bad I didn't have it last night.

You just select the video you want to save to your computer and add the word kick before the YouTube URL.  Please try it. If you have a problem, explain it on this list.

Detailed instructions follow.

YouTube is a vast library of videos for all content areas. As a teacher, you can search YouTube to find multimedia clips that would be fabulous resources for your classroom. However, YouTube is most likely filtered or blocked in your school.

This week's tool offers an easy way to download (save) YouTube videos to your computer so that you can show them in your classroom - even if you aren't connected to the Internet!

(I can't remember for sure where I learned about this tool, but I think it was first shown to me by my colleague Glenn Wiebe.)

KickYouTube

Getting Ready:

1. 1.Go to: www.youtube.com

2. 2.Locate the desired video.

3.                3.Play a part of the video to make sure it is working.

Loading KickYouTube:

1. 1.Move your mouse into your browsers address (URL) window.

2.                2.Insert the word "kick" in front of "youtube" in the URL.

3. 3.Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

4. 4.When the page reloads you will see KickYouTube's menu bar at the top of the window.

Saving (Downloading) the Video:

1.                1.Click to select the desired format and then click the "Go" button at the right side of the bar.

Note - Experiment with a short video to see which format works best on your computer. I recommend starting with MP4 for Macintosh and FLV for Windows.

3. 3.Right-click (Win) or Control-click (Mac) the blue download button and choose "Save link as" or "Save Target as" or something similar.

4. 4.This will open a window that will allow you to save the video to the desired location on your computer.

5. 5.Once the video is saved, double-click to open it. It should open and play in QuickTime, FlashPlayer, Windows Media Player, or another media player application.

Science Finally Reveals How You Can Actually REVERSE Aging

Science Finally Reveals How You Can Actually REVERSE Aging: "If you were to unravel the tip of the chromosome, a telomere is about 15,000 bases long at the moment of conception in the womb. (Remember the length of the entire chromosome is about 100 million bases.)

Immediately after conception your cells begin to divide, and your telomeres begin to shorten each time the cell divides.

Once your telomeres have been reduced to about 5,000 bases, you essentially die of old age."

Interestingly, researchers have discovered that reproductive cells do not age. They do not undergo the same telomere shortening process as all other cells in your body do.

This is due to the presence and production of an enzyme called telomerase.

Somatic cells (all cells other than your reproductive cells) do not produce telomerase, however, they do contain the gene for telomerase production. The gene is simply turned off, which causes the telomere shortening process to proceed.

The strategy is to turn the telomerase gene back on in somatic cells. They’re doing this by DECIDING THAT YOU CAN DO THIS - - TELL YOUR CELLS TO turn back on telomerase production.

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight - Yahoo! News

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010 Tonight - Yahoo! News:
A full moon is seen over the Houses of Parliament in London Reuters – A full moon is seen over the Houses of Parliament in London January 1, 2010. REUTERS/Dylan Martinez …

Tonight's full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name.

But why will this moon be bigger than others? Here's how the moon works:

The moon is, on average, 238,855 miles (384,400 km) from Earth. The moon's orbit around Earth – which causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days – is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of the orbit is 31,070 miles (50,000 km) closer than the other.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year.

Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full Moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, star-like object.

Full moon craziness

Many people think full moons cause strange behavior among animals and even humans. In fact several studies over the years have tried to tie lunar phases to births, heart attacks, deaths, suicides, violence, psychiatric hospital admissions and epileptic seizures, and more. Connections have been inclusive or nonexistent.

The moon does have some odd effects on our planet, and there are oodles of other amazing moon facts and misconceptions:

  • A full moon at perigee also brings higher ocean tides. This tug of the moon on Earth also creates tides in the planet's crust, not just in the oceans.
  • Beaches are more polluted during full moon, owing to the higher tides.
  • In reality, there's no such thing as a full moon. The full moon occurs when the sun, Earth and the moon are all lined up, almost. If they're perfectly aligned, Earth casts a shadow on the moon and there's a total lunar eclipse. So during what we call a full moon, the moon's face is actually slightly less than 100 percent illuminated.
  • The moon is moving away as you read this, by about 1.6 inches (4 cm) a year.

The moon illusion

Finally, be sure to get out and see the full moon as it rises, right around sunset. Along the horizon, the moon tends to seem even bigger. This is just an illusion.

You can prove to yourself that this is an illusion. Taking a small object such as a pencil eraser, hold it at arm's length, and compare its size to that of the moon just as it rises. Then repeat the experiment later in the night and you'll see that the moon compares the same in both cases. Alternately, snap two photos of the moon, with a digital camera or your cell phone, when the moon is near the horizon and later when it's higher in the sky. Pull both photos up on your computer screen and make a side-by-side comparison.

Astronomers and psychologists agree the moon illusion is just that, but they don't agree on how to explain it.

Pull the Plug on Your Internet

Senate Bill Would Give President Obama Authority to Pull the Plug on Your Internet
Posted by: Dr. Mercola

Internet
CNET News has obtained a summary of a proposal from Senators Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) that would create an Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor, part of the Executive Office of the President. That office would receive the power to disconnect, if it believes they're at risk of a cyberattack, "critical" computer networks from the Internet.

"I regard this as a profoundly and deeply troubling problem to which we are not paying much attention," Rockefeller said at a hearing, referring to cybersecurity.

Senate bill 773 (The Cybersecurity Act of 2009) is causing a flurry of opposition from groups like Campaign for Liberty, which has sent out letters to their members appealing for them to take action against passage of this bill, stating:
"If the 'Internet Takeover Bill' passes, Barack Obama can silence his dissenters directly -- by ordering a shutdown of all Americans' access to the Internet. But that's not all. Even outside of periods of White House-declared 'emergency,' this bill mandates that private-sector networks only be managed by government-licensed cybersecurity professionals."

Sources:
Dr. Mercola's Comments:

If you're thinking this is another one of those "out there" conspiracy theories drummed up to discredit the President or any part of the current administration, think again.

Senate bill 773 (The Cybersecurity Act of 2009) is a very real, and very alarming, piece of legislation that is pending action right now.

You can read the record for yourself at the Library of Congress, but I'll post the description of the proposed Senate bill 773 here too:

"A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes."

The bill was introduced on April 1, 2009, but unfortunately was not an April Fool's joke.

According to the Library of Congress, the bill was referred to Senate committee, has been read twice and was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. The bill was also apparently redrafted since its initial release, but still reportedly contains vague language that appears to grant the president authority to seize control of private-sector Internet networks during a "cybersecurity emergency."

What's Concerning About The Cybersecurity Act of 2009?

Like the recently introduced Food Safety Enforcement Act and the slightly older Patriot Act and Homeland Security Act, The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 was introduced under the guise of public safety, but in reality contains inclusions that could seriously impact and threaten your privacy and civil liberties.

According to CNET News, The Act, even in "revised" form, would allow:

  • The president to "declare a cybersecurity emergency" relating to "non-governmental" computer networks and do what's necessary to respond to the threat.

  • The president to "direct the national response to the cyber threat" if necessary for "the national defense and security."

  • The White House to engage in "periodic mapping" of private networks deemed to be critical, and those companies "shall share" requested information with the federal government.

  • A federal certification program for "cybersecurity professionals," and a requirement that certain computer systems and networks in the private sector be managed by people who have that license.

In case you were wondering, "Cyber" in the Bill is defined as anything having to do with the Internet, telecommunications, computers, or computer networks, so you can see the enormous power that is being granted to the government.

The Internet is Now Threatening to Crush "Big Brother"

The Internet has rapidly become a very important media voice and force. No longer are we "imprisoned" in our insular caves and dependent on the major networks and newspapers for our news.

People like you, your friends and relatives are actually using social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook to bypass these outlets and information is capable of spreading like wildfire.

Is the government now getting nervous, realizing how little control they have over this? Are they now looking for ways to shut down your access, and contributions, to this free source of information and TRUTH?

As you may know, there are countries that do this as a matter of course, but here in the United States we are supposed to be free …

The Internet has really become one of the last bastions of independent, free-thinking news available around the world, so I am very glad to see that The Cybersecurity Act of 2009 is drawing widespread and deserved criticism from Internet companies and civil liberty groups alike.

But even though the United States enjoys access to much more free press than many other countries, the system is clearly not without flaws, nor is it impervious to violations that threaten your freedom to access and share information.

How Can You Help Protect Your Freedom to Use and Access the Internet?

There are two major social network players: Facebook and Twitter and I encourage you to join BOTH. You can also visit my Facebook page, or follow me on Twitter.

Next, sign up for our new social network on Mercola.com, which has taken us over five years to build.

Once you join you will easily be able to connect to other like-minded individuals for support and insights.

Then, while you still can, use the power of the Internet to spread the news about Senate bill 773. Share this information with your friends, family and social circles, and together we can all change the world for the better
